These boards were installed properly and they are not old. What has changed is what has been hung on them since, because a finished basement, a home office, a hot tub and a car charger have all landed on panels that were sized before any of those existed.
What does a typical Northeast Wichita board look like?
Modern make, 150 or 200 amp service, an accurate panel schedule, and frequently a subpanel feeding a garage or a finished lower level. That is a good starting position, and it means most calls here end in a component repair rather than a replacement.
The weak point is the subpanel rather than the main. Subpanel terminations loosen over time, particularly in a garage that swings from freezing to over a hundred degrees across a Kansas year, and a loose termination there affects every circuit downstream of it.

Do I need a service upgrade for an EV charger here?
Frequently not, and we would rather say so than sell one. Most houses in this area already run a 200 amp service with genuine headroom. We run a load calculation against the four loads that decide it, which are heating and cooling, an electric range, a dryer and water heating, then apply the demand factors the code allows.
Where the panel takes the charger as it stands, we install the circuit and leave the board alone. That answer is available more often than the industry lets on.
