The bungalows and cottages that define Riverside mostly went up between the 1900s and the 1930s. Their electrical services have been added to rather than replaced, and the board on the wall is often the third or fourth thing to occupy that spot.
A wider range than anywhere else we cover. Original fuse boxes are still in service in a number of these houses, usually 60 amp and usually with no compliant way left to add a circuit. No. An existing fuse box that was compliant when installed is generally allowed to stay. What you cannot do is extend it, because adding a circuit means the work is inspected against current code and a fuse box will not satisfy it. That restriction is what drives most conversions, along with insurers who have started asking.
