Read the label on the door and you can tell most of what matters about your panel in two minutes. What each brand name means, and what never to touch.
People send me photographs of their panels most weeks. Roughly a third of them are photographs nobody should have taken, because the inner cover is off and the bus bars are showing. So before anything else, the safety point, and then the useful part.
Your panel has two layers. The outer door swings open like a cupboard and shows you the row of breaker handles. That is safe to open, and the manufacturer's label is usually on the inside of it.
Behind the breakers is a screwed-on metal cover, sometimes called the dead front. Behind that are the bus bars, and they stay energised even with the main breaker switched off, because they sit on the utility side of it. There is no switch inside your house that de-energises them. Leave that cover alone regardless of what any video shows you.
More than you would expect. The manufacturer, the service rating in amps, whether it is a breaker panel or a fuse box, and often the panel's approximate age. Between them those four things decide whether your panel is a component repair, a planned replacement, or nothing to worry about.
Federal Pacific, FPE, Federal Noark, breakers marked Stab-Lok. These have a documented history of breakers failing to trip under fault conditions. The CPSC investigated from 1980 and closed the case in 1983 citing cost, without ever declaring them safe, and clarified in 2011 that closing it was not a clean bill of health. Independent testing has repeatedly found fail-to-trip rates far above what UL permits. No formal recall was ever issued. That is not the same as being fine.
Zinsco, Sylvania, GTE-Sylvania, usually with coloured breaker handles. Different failure, same conclusion. Aluminium bus bars and a contact design that lets breakers weld to the bus, so the handle reads off while the circuit stays live. A breaker that cannot disconnect cannot trip either.
Challenger. Shares the Stab-Lok lineage, and a CPSC recall covered specific 15 and 20 amp Challenger breakers where a component could detach and overheat.
Any fuse box. Not defective, just obsolete. Almost always 60 amp, with no compliant way to add a circuit.
Pushmatic or Bulldog. Sound design when built between 1950 and 1980, and not in the same category as the makes above. The problems are age: many have no main breaker, the mechanism stiffens until breakers stop tripping cleanly, and parts are scarce.
Wadsworth. Also fine when installed, also long out of production. Availability decides it.
Aftermarket replacement breakers. This one deserves attention because it is invisible from the door. Companies sell breakers designed to fit obsolete panels, and the CPSC has flagged certain of them for failing to trip under overload. If an old board has been kept alive with those, the repair has become part of the problem.
Square D QO and Homeline, Eaton and Cutler-Hammer, Siemens, Murray, General Electric and ABB. All current or fully supported, with breakers still in production. On any of these, a fault is almost always one component and it gets repaired rather than replaced.
Seeing one of these names does not mean nothing can go wrong. It means that when something does, you are looking at a part rather than a board.
Look at the main breaker, the largest one, usually at the top or bottom of the row. The number printed on its handle is your service rating: 60, 100, 125, 150 or 200.
If there is no single largest breaker, and instead several bigger ones grouped together, you have a split-bus panel. Those were common in Wichita houses from the 1960s and 1970s. It is not a defect. It does mean there is no one switch that kills the whole house, which matters when you are trying to make a panel safe quickly.
Whether the house has outgrown the service. Sixty amps is undersized for any modern house. A hundred amps is workable for a smaller house on gas heat and runs out of headroom the moment central air, an electric range or a car charger arrives. A hundred and fifty is usually fine. Two hundred is the current normal.
Wichita's median house was built in 1974, and about one home in five predates 1950. A lot of this city is running services that were generous when a household needed power for lights, a refrigerator and a television.
And use your nose and your hand. A warm cover, a hum, a crackle or any burnt smell means switch the main off and call somebody the same day. Those are not identification questions.
Two shots. The open door showing the manufacturer's label, and the row of breakers with the door open and the cover still on. Between them, any competent electrician can tell you the make, the rating, roughly the age, and whether you are looking at a repair or a replacement, without driving out.
That is genuinely how most of these conversations should start. It costs you nothing and it stops you being quoted for a board that somebody has not seen.
There is rarely a date on the label, but there are usually clues. Manufacturers stamp a date code on the inside of the door or on the deadfront, often as a two digit year. Breaker handles carry style changes that place them within a decade. And the make itself narrows it: a Zinsco puts you between roughly 1950 and 1980, a Federal Pacific between the mid 1950s and the late 1980s.
The most reliable clue is the service rating against the build year of the house. A 100 amp service in a 1968 Wichita ranch is almost certainly original. A 200 amp service in the same house is a replacement, and worth asking when and by whom.
It happens, particularly where a door has been replaced or a board painted over during a remodel. Two things still help. The breaker handles themselves usually carry the manufacturer's name moulded into the plastic, and the shape of the handle is distinctive between makes. Photograph a single breaker close up and that is often enough.
Failing that, the deadfront screws, the enclosure proportions and the bus layout identify most boards to somebody who opens them weekly. That is a job for an electrician on site rather than a homeowner with a torch, and it is part of a normal assessment rather than an extra.
Being quoted for the wrong job. The single most expensive mistake available here is paying for a replacement on a board that needed a component, and the second is paying for a component repair on a board that was never going to be safe.
Two minutes with the door open puts you in a position to have a sensible conversation with whoever you call. You will know the make, the rating, and whether you are in the replace group, the look-carefully group or the fine group. Very few homeowners walk into a panel quote with that, and it changes the discussion completely.
